When
is a banquet more than a banquet?
When
it has become a tradition-such as
the annual Rainbow Stores' banquet.
The
twelfth annual Rainbow banquet, held
Tuesday, February 25, celebrated many
years of friendship and co-operation
between the advertising members of
the Rainbow Food Stores and the executives
representing the manufacturers of
the various food products which they
advertise and sell in their stores.
This
annual banquet is a strictly invitational
affair with the Rainbow members acting
as hosts to the manufacturers. It
is perhaps the only party of its kind
where the store owners entirely foot
the bill, plan the party and supply
the entertainment and where the top
executives of manufacturing firms
meet the grocers on a friendly basic
only, without mention or promotion
of business relationships.
TRAVERSO
TOASTMASTER
During the evening the entire
theme of personal acquaintance and
friendship is stressed. Victor Traverso,
acting as toastmaster, began the dinner
with a roll call of manufacturers,
asking each one to rise, introduce
himself and state the number of these
banquets he had personally attended.
Over
half of those present had enjoyed
every one of the twelve occasions
and most of them had attended a majority
of the times.
Seated
at the head table as guests of honor
were the Hon. George R. Reilly, member
of the State board of equalization;
Supervisor John MacGowan; Howard H.
Fassett, president of the Brokers'
Association; Tom Swan, president of
the Sales Managers' Club' E. G. Williams,
secretary of the Wholesale Distributors'
Association of Northern California,
and several secretaries of various
retail grocers' associations, including
F. A. Tissier of San Francisco, John
Shoults of Central Coast Counties,
and Henry Jacobs of Alameda.
INFORMALITY
STRESSED
Also at the head table were
the three Traverso brothers, Vic,
Bill and Jack; Rainbow's advertising
manager, "Steve" Stevenson,
and "Pete" Dal Porto, assistant
advertising manager. Present also
were members of Rainbow's sales staff.
The dinner was held at the Commercial
Club and was the principal activity
of the evening. A short speech of
welcome was made by Jack Traverso
but this formality was quickly put
aside for the purpose of enjoying
a floor show and the general conviviality
of the occasion.
